Melanie O’Sullivan is the Sales & Marketing Manager at Radio Kerry. She has been with the station since 1995. As well as the commercial remit of Radio Kerry Melanie has been involved in the set up of two Radio Kerry fundraising organisations; the Kerry Christmas Appeal & the Radio Kerry Community Fund. She is also involved in event planning for the station.
In her other life the roles she best loves is as a daughter, friend and a faithful companion to her beloved Boxer Ali.

Because I am a Girl I ask… that whoever you are and wherever you are you come to realize that you really are as good as everyone else and better than most of those you perceive to be “better” than you. My father has said that to me many times throughout my life and although it’s a daily learning process my life experience teaches me that he is right. The only thing that truly ever limits me is my own mind.
Because I am a Girl I believe… that living in “the now” is the most important gift you can give to yourself. It is best not to let your past shape or limit your future. The past is over and the future is full of potential once we do not let our past experiences rush in to shape it. While we’re still here lets live for now and believe that life can only get better.
Because I am a Girl I hope… that all girls everywhere show respect for themselves. Be strong, stand tall and love yourself. Think yourself smarter. Be self aware. Have confidence in your own ability, celebrate your differences and learn something new every day. Open your mind.
Because I am a Girl I wonder… why being nice is often perceived as being weak as opposed to being something to which we should aspire. Why are we so tolerant of the arrogant, spiteful and deceitful behaviours so often found in those who “succeed”? Such behaviours are simply not acceptable.
Because I am a Girl I dream… of a world that accepts that we are all individuals and that we are entitled to our opinions, a world where there is no right or wrong but an acceptance of the right to a different opinion to our “neighbours”.
Because I am a Girl I remember… a time when it was safe for a girl of any age to be out alone day or night, when going out in the evening as a teenager meant hanging out at the roller disco or the beach with your friends without having to drink alcohol or take drugs to be cool, when there were only 2 channels on the TV and on the radio, when you couldn’t be contacted 24/7, when people respected peers, parents, elders, teachers, gardai, when IR£50 was a lot of money and when no really meant no.
Because I am a Girl I like… being in a position to live in a country as beautiful as Ireland which offers equal opportunity for all. Being readily able appreciate beauty and talent in both men and women and to express this openly without fear of ridicule, oppression or torture. Being in a position to be single and independent without stigma in society. Being able to take on any career or hobby that I believe I can succeed at.
Because I am a Girl I dislike… being stereotyped. Yes I like cars and big dogs. It’s ok for me to be single, self motivated, independent and ambitious at any age. Being nice to and respectful of others is common sense … what you give out you get back … try grimacing at me when I smile at you.
Because I am a Girl I feel… that we spend too much time trying to make men and women the same … we are not … we have different physiologies, different psychologies … we are different – that’s what makes us men and women … let us recognize and accept those differences and expend our time and energy on working out how to complement each other rather than trying to morph us into one another.
Because I am a Girl I… realize just how fortunate I am to be thoughtful, sensual, smart, sexy and most of all alive. My life, for however long it lasts, gives me a daily chance to contribute to shaping the world around me in my own unique way.
