In her spare time she volunteers her services to local charities including Making Connections – a befriending service for the elderly in Dunlaoghaire Rathdown, the Children’s Sunshine Home, building the 1st children’s hospice in Leopardstown and Cabinteely Football Club.

She and her son sponsor a five year old boy in Cameroon with Plan Ireland.

Because I am a girl I ask… Why do we have to campaign to be treated equally because of our gender, surely our contribution to society is already evident.

Because I am a girl I believe… that every human being should have the same rights and respect regardless of sex, colour or creed.

Because I am a girl I hope… that this campaign highlights the injustice against women, particularly women in the developing world and can begin to sow the seeds of change.

Because I am a girl I wonder… what my life would be like if I grew up in Sub Saharan Africa. I’m not sure if I could type this, not because of the lack of technology but because I may not be educated enough to read, write and type!

Because I am a girl I dream… that needless female deaths in childbirth are eradicated.  According to the world health organization - an estimated 358,000 maternal deaths occurred worldwide in 2008. This means that each day about 1,000 women die worldwide because of complications related to pregnancy and childbirth. Developing countries account for 99% of the deaths.

Because I am a girl I remember… my mother coming home from work as a midwife, her beautiful white starch uniform covered in blood and a wide smile on her face telling me she brought another healthy baby into the world. Now that’s job satisfaction!

Because I am a girl I dislike… that when I work hard and push people to get something done right I’m considered a bitch but my male colleagues are considered ‘go getters’.

Because I am a girl I feel… blessed to have been born in a country that values me, that provided me with free education, good access to healthcare and freedom to make my own decisions in life. Our female counterparts in the developing world are not so lucky.

  • Because I am a Girl...

I have a much higher chance of making headline news - as a victim of rape, assault or murder. But because I am a girl I have the innate strength to carry on challenging the threats to my freedom.

  • Because I am a Girl...

I rise to the challenge, and do the unexpected. I raise my voice so that I can always be heard. I push myself even when the little voices in my head are saying, sure you dont belong here, who do you think you are. I struggle on and dont alllow society to to label or box me because of the sex I am, the colour of my skin, my sexuality, my spiritual beliefs. I am, and I will.
