Natalie Cooper is an Assistant Professor in the School of Natural Sciences at Trinity College Dublin. She came to Ireland two years ago, before which she worked in the USA and studied in the UK. Natalie’s research is in ecology and evolution, so she spends a lot of time in museums looking at mammal skulls and thinking about dinosaurs… And yes that’s a baby alligator in the picture!
- Because I am a Girl I ask … questions about everything! That’s why I’m a scientist, I want to know how everything works and why.
- Because I am a Girl I believe … girls are just as good at science, engineering and maths as boys. Never let anyone convince you otherwise.
- Because I am a Girl I hope … governments everywhere will finally realise the importance of educating girls and boys.
- Because I am a Girl I wonder … how different the world would be if all girls were educated? I predict it would be a much happier, healthier and fairer place!
- Because I am a Girl I dream … of a world where all girls are able to get an education and reach their full potential, regardless of nationality, wealth or status.
- Because I am a Girl I remember … being in scientific meetings surrounded by men. I’m now working hard to change this for future generations.
- Because I am a Girl I like … weird animal facts, laughing, reading, hiking and science.
- Because I am a Girl I dislike … it when people explain things to me as if I’m an idiot just because I’m female (this still happens to me all the time even though I’m a university professor).
- Because I am a Girl I feel … frustrated that we’ve achieved so much, and yet so many girls still miss out on an education and instead are forced to work or get married.
- Because I am a Girl I celebrate… the wonderful world we live in and the courageous people who are trying to make it better for girls everywhere.
